7 Ways to Ramp Up Your Outdoor Workout

With the temps warming up, it’s time to take your workout outside with these awesome outdoor workout ideas. We’ve got tips to make your workout pass by in a flash, whether you incorporate strength, cardio bursts or a friend to challenge you.

With the temps warming up, it's time to take your workout outside with these awesome outdoor workout ideas. We've got tips to make your workout pass by in a flash, whether you incorporate strength, cardio bursts or a friend to challenge you.

The temps are FINALLY warming up, which means we’ll be taking lots of our workouts outside.

Whether you have the convenience of the lakes of Minneapolis to walk or canoe like Lee, or the ability to run or cycle alongside Lake Michigan like Monique (or even if you’re land-locked) there are plenty of ways to mix up your next outdoor workout.

On your next three mile run or hike, try incorporating strength moves after each mile, find a big set of stairs at your local high school or grab a friend for some extra motivation. No matter which one you try, we promise it’ll make your workout FUN and quick.

 

1. Take the stairs.

We don’t just mean on your way to work or up to our apartment; try incorporating several flights of stairs at a park near you to your next outdoor run. Start with 10 flights {jogging up, walking down} and then increase it from there.

2. Step it up.

A park bench is the perfect tool for set of step-ups, lunges or single-leg squats. Do three set of 15 reps per legs for a great burn.

3. Head for the hills. 

Flat runs keep your heart rate relatively steady, but if you’re looking for a quick boost, find a hill near you {30 seconds to the top works well} and incorporate a few hill repeats, running quickly on the way up and walking or slowly jogging down.

4. Find the sand. 

While we’re in full support of taking time off, on your next beach vacation {or if you’re lucky enough to live by the beach} take part of your run to the beach. The deep sand contributes added resistance; we promise you’ll feel it quickly!

5. Bodyweight is your friend. 

Sometimes there’s nothing simpler and more effective than using the weight of your body for some heart-pumping strength work. Our favorites include squats, push ups, tricep dips, lunges and calf raises.

6. Sprint it out.

Don’t have hills, sand or stairs near you? Just pick up your pace to incorporate sprint intervals on your next run. Make sure to build in time for rest!

7. Phone a friend.

There’s nothing like a little competition to increase the intensity of your workout. Call up a friend for your next outdoor run and challenge each other with things like sprint intervals and bodyweight exercises.

  1. COOL IDEAS! IT’S CRAZY HOW MUCH TOUGHER A WORKOUT WILL BE IN SAND!

    THIS YEAR I MAY BUY A FEW WEIGHTS, SOME FANS AND TRY WORKING OUT EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE.

    ANOTHER GREAT THING TO DO OUTSIDE IS STRETCHING AND YOGA. ALL I DO IS BRING A MAT AND FIND A NICE SPOT.
